Chickens love treats! Here are some healthy treats to add to your chickens’ diet.

Please do not count on chickens knowing what is bad for them.

Things to Never Feed Your Hens:

  • Earthworms

  • Chickens may find and eat them themselves, however eating earthworms may cause Gapeworm, so please do not dig them up and feed them to your chickens!

  • Citrus Fruit

  • Chickens may not be given any type of citrus.

  • Candy, Caffeine, Chocolate, Anything Salty, Sugary or Moldy

  • These are bad for their digestive systems and can even kill them

  • Other Foods to Avoid: Avocados, Dairy, Onions

Things Your Hens Can Have:

  • Blueberries

  • Source of magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and calcium

  • Provide vitamins A, C and K, as well as choline and folate and are a natural source of antioxidants

  • Bread

  • Stale bread is perfectly ok!

  • Avoid giving them bread with mold on it

  • Feed starches in moderation

  • Cabbage

  • Source of protein, vitamins A and C, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and selenium

  • Hang this fresh veggie in the chicken run keeping your chickens well-entertained as the peck at it

  • Pumpkin

  • Prodvide vitamins A and C, folate, choline, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium

  • Chickens love the flesh and seeds

  • Leafy Greens

  • Spinach, kale, and romaine lettuce

  • High nutrients and low calories

  • Oatmeal

  • Warming and nutritious

  • Source of protein, folate and choline, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium and potassium

  • Scrambled Eggs

  • Well-cooked eggs provide hens with sources of vitamins A and D, folate, choline, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and selenium

  • Excellent source of protein

  • Note - Prepared firmly, they will be well disguised to your hens; serving them undercooked or raw can encourage egg-eating in your flock

  • Sunflower Seeds

  • Avoid salted seeds

  • Help egg production

  • Safe to offer with or without seeds

  • Tomatoes

  • Natural calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, choline and vitamins A, C and K

  • Watermelon

  • Chickens love fruit (avoid apricots!)

  • Offer it during hot days to keep them hydrated

  • Provide vitamins A and C, folate, choline, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium

  • Yogurt

  • Plain yogurt is great for digestive health

  • Avoid giving too much and causing diarrhea
